Poland’s President Vetoes Crypto Bill, Citing Threats to Freedom and Economic Stability
Poland’s President Andrzej Duda has vetoed the Crypto-Asset Market Act, a move that leaves the country as one of the few EU members without formal cryptocurrency regulations. The decision has ignited political tensions and raised concerns about Poland’s regulatory future in the digital asset space.
The veto centers on provisions granting the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (KNF) sweeping powers to block crypto websites with minimal oversight. President Duda framed the bill as a threat to civil liberties and economic stability, warning that overregulation could drive blockchain businesses to neighboring jurisdictions.
The legislation aimed to implement the EU’s MiCA framework but faced criticism for its complexity—spanning over 100 pages compared to leaner implementations in Czechia and Slovakia. This regulatory divergence creates uncertainty for exchanges and service providers awaiting clarity on licensing requirements.
